February 23, 2001 Sp67 Contact: Sarah Maxwell Director of Media Relations 507.646.4183 Three Carleton College Students Named to USA Today’s College Academic Teams Northfield, Minn. — Three Carleton College seniors were named to USA Today’s All-USA College Academic Teams, as announced in the Feb. 15 issue of the newspaper. Carl Tape of Fairbanks, Alaska, was one of 20 students named to the First Team; Heather O’Hara of Boiling Springs, Pa., was selected to the Second Team; and Sara Barker of Portland, Ore., received Honorable Mention. The three students were chosen from 682 nominees. Tape received a $2,500 award for selection to the First Team. A Rhodes Scholar, Tape is a physics and geology double major and has published articles and given presentations on research on Earth processes including analyses of mirages and tides. He is co-captain of Carleton’s men’s soccer team and has received all-conference honors in soccer and track. Tape plans to complete a master’s of science degree by research in earth sciences at Oxford University next year. O’Hara is a studio art major who has been active in community service during her time at Carleton. She organized a weekly arts workshop called Handprints at a local retirement home and helped found WomenCircle, a partnership between middle school students and college women. O’Hara also co-coordinated pre-freshman orientation trips and spent a term in Australia studying art on a Carleton off-campus studies program. Next year she plans to be an instructor at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts. Barker is a Latin American studies major who spent last summer conducting research in Chile, where she studied political memories and memorials to the human rights abuses that occurred during the Pinochet dictatorship. She also is a captain of Carleton’s women’s tennis team, an English as a Second Language (ESL) tutor and a student wellness advisor. Next year she hopes to work for a social service agency in an Hispanic community through the AmeriCorps Vista program. # # # #
