Carnegie Corporation of New York Names Carleton Professor a ‘Scholar of Vision’

Northfield, Minn. — The Carnegie Corporation of New York has named Jamie Monson, associate professor of history at Carleton College, one of 16 "Scholars of Vision." The leading researchers and scholars were chosen for their innovative scholarship in education, international development, strengthening U.S. democracy, and international peace and security. Monson will receive up to $100,000 over the next two years to support her research on the development potential of the TAZARA Railway in Tanzania.

Monson is a specialist in the culture and history of eastern and southern Africa, with particular interests in African agriculture, geography and rural development. Her current project is titled "Using Technology to Evaluate the Development Potential of the TAZARA Railway."

The railway was built with assistance from China in the early 1970s and has resulted in a thriving local and regional economy in the Kilombero valley region of Tanzania. Monson will attempt to measure the benefits of this activity by collecting data from parcel receipts together with digital maps to illustrate the role played by the railway in rural development. Her project will allow planners to understand patterns of trade and settlement along the railway, and will be a model for evaluating other similar transportation systems.

Monson has taught at Carleton since 1991 and received her B.A. in English and German from Stanford University. She holds a Ph.D. in East African history from the University of California, Los Angeles.
