Carleton College Student Awarded Prestigious Truman Scholarship
Northfield, Minn.Jason Richardson, a junior at Carleton College, has been awarded a 2001 Harry S. Truman Scholarship. Richardson, a political science and international relations major from Boise, Idaho, was one of 70 students from institutions across the nation selected to receive a scholarship. The award provides a $30,000 merit-based grant to support graduate or professional school in preparation for careers in government, the non-profit sector or public service.
"I am thrilled," Richardson said. "I have been
in contact with past Truman Scholars, and I'm looking forward
to being in a community with them."
The Scholars were selected from 592 candidates nominated by 303
four-year colleges and universities. Scholarships are awarded
to students who have extensive records of public and community
service, are committed to careers in government or elsewhere
in public service and have outstanding leadership potential and
communication skills.
Richardson plans to attend law school to study international
law and human rights issues. Last summer he worked for the Idaho
Migrant Council as an advocate for economic and social justice
for farm families, and served on the credentials committee at
the 2000 Democratic National Convention. He was awarded a Carleton
College Chang-Lan Fellowship, and will spend the upcoming summer
in China studying the floating population-workers who have left
their homes because of economic circumstances.
A member of the College's Model United Nations team, Richardson
will serve as co-head delegate at an assembly in New York this
spring. In addition, he is a member of Carleton's International
Relations Council and competes on the debate team. He is a midfielder
on the soccer team and plays guitar in Carleton's jazz ensemble.
A 1998 graduate of Eagle High School, Richardson is the son of
Peter and Betty Richardson of Boise.
