External Communications
- News announcements and calendars
Each year, we issue hundreds of news releases and news tips, on subjects such as research, innovative teaching, unique classes, major honors and achievements, and events. We also use letters, e-mails, phone calls, and meetings to interest reporters in writing stories about Carleton programs, people and events.
- Media inquiries
We field hundreds of calls and electronic queries each year from journalists wanting information about Carleton, needing help in arranging interviews, or looking for a faculty or staff member to provide insight for their story.
- Opinion pieces/editorials
We assist faculty and staff in placing commentary pieces, and book and movie reviews in newspapers and magazines. We offer writing and editing advice, and handle all placement details.
- Photography
We shoot and print photographs of news events and people on campus for distribution to the media and other Carleton-related publicity purposes.
- Sports Information
We promote Carleton’s varsity athletics programs by providing media relations and statistical reporting, coordinating athletic publications, and managing news and photographic coverage of sporting events.
- Crisis Communications
The Office of Media Relations is responsible for handling media inquiries during times of crisis. A rapid, accurate response is essential to the reputation of Carleton. As the official gatekeeper for all news media during these times, our office acts as an information base, as well as a go-between for reporters and College spokespersons.
Internal Communications
- Carleton Kudos
We publish a monthly newsletter highlighting the accomplishments of faculty, students, staff and alumni that is circulated on campus and to trustees and alumni volunteers. Appropriate listings include, but are not limited to, papers presented, awards or grants received, articles and books published, and offices held.
- Carleton Headlines
In an effort to inform the campus about Carleton’s presence in the news, we publish a monthly summary of news articles and broadcasts that featured Carleton in any number of ways.
- News and Athletics online
The media relations office is responsible for maintaining the news and athletics section of Carleton’s Web site. We post everything from breaking news to student profiles and news releases, sports scores and stories, and links to online news sites.
