The mission of the Reference and Instruction Department is to assist the Carleton
community in effectively and efficiently fulfilling its information needs and
developing information fluency.
We achieve this mission through providing both resources and services to meet the information needs of the Carleton community. We are staffed by technically savvy, service-oriented librarians actively engaged in the learning and teaching process through a close liaison with academic and support departments.
Services include the following:
Liaisons to individual departments in one of four areas of study (Arts and Literature, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Humanities, and Social Sciences)
Mellon Information Literacy Initiative - focuses on five departments: Classics, Economics, English, Geology, History
Collaboration with Information Technology Services, especially with the Academic coordinators who support faculty in departments similar to our liaison departments
Collaboration with the Learning and Teaching Center, The Wrtie Place, the Writing Across the Curriculum program, the Career Center, and special programs offered at Carleton
Reorganizing the reference area and the computer lab into a" Learning Commons"
Publicity program that includes librarian trading cards, signs, newspaper and radio ads, as well as special events to highlight Reference and Instruction services to the Carleton community.
