Sender Message High, Jason Tue, 10 Sep 2002 16:31:49 -0400 Endnote 6.0 and Word XP Dear EndNote Users, There is a known problem that occurs with some installations of Word xp where the use of certain smart tags in Word triggers a memory leak. The symptoms include Word running slowly or freezing and reporting error messages such as "Unknown Error 0x800A1007" or which indicate there are not enough resources or memory. Memory usage will gradually increase and the CPU usage may climb to 100% and stay there, requiring the user to End Task in order to quit Word. It is a good idea to make sure you have the latest updates from Microsoft installed (see http://office.microsoft.com/productupdates/). Our development staff is currently working with Microsoft to determine the best way to address this issue, but if you experience this problem here is a workaround that will resolve it. 1. In Word xp click on Tools / AutoCorrect Options, then click on SmartTags. Make sure that "Label text with smart tags" is checked. 2. Under Recognizers uncheck all except "Cwyw Citation Recognizer" 3. Click on Remove Smart Tags 4. Go to Tools / Autocorrect Options / Smart Tags and Click on Recheck Document. You should no longer have problems working with EndNote in these document, and any new documents you create should also work fine. If you have older documents that exhibit the memory problem you *may* need to repeat the following once in the document... 1. Go to Tools / Autocorrect Options / Smart Tags and click on Remove Smart Tags. 2. Go to Tools / Autocorrect Options / Smart Tags and click on Recheck Document. ...the first time you open them after applying the above Word configuration change (they may have their smart tags recognized/saved in the document). If you still have trouble, try the following alternative workaround... 1. In Word go to Tools / Options / File Locations, select Startup and click the Modify button. Note the path to the Word Startup folder as indicated under the Look In dropdown box at the top of the window. 2. Now cancel out of this window, close Word (and MS Outlook, if running), and navigate to this folder through Windows Explorer or My Computer. (Note: If you cannot find the specified folder your windows preferences may be set to hide the folder. In Windows Explorer go to Tools / Folder Options / View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files or folders" is selected.). 3. You should have at least two files in this folder, EN6Cwyw.WordXP.wll & EN6CWYW.dot. Remove EN6Cwyw.WordXP.wll and place it on the desktop. 4. If you also see a file in this folder called EN6Cwyw.wll, do nothing further. If you do not see this file, navigate to the EndNote 6 program folder (typically C:\Program Files\EndNote) and locate a file called EN6Cwyw.wll. Make a copy of this file and paste it into the Word Startup folder. Now start Word again. You should now be able to insert citations and work with EndNote 6 and Word xp without it slowing down, freezing, or crashing. Contact technical support if you still have trouble with this.
