What is EndNote?

• EndNote is an online search tool -- it provides a simple way to search online bibliographic databases and retrieve the references directly into EndNote. (EndNote can also import data files saved from a variety of online services, CD-ROMs, and library databases.)
  
• EndNote is a reference and image database -- it specializes in storing, managing, and searching for bibliographic references in your private reference library. Now you can organize images including charts, figures, and equations with a caption and your own keywords.
  
• EndNote is a bibliography and manuscript maker -- it formats citations and figures in Microsoft Word with the Cite While You Write technology. Watch the bibliography and figure list appear as you insert citations in your manuscript. New Microsoft Word templates guide you through the exacting manuscript requirements of publishers.

EndNote at Carleton

The Gould Library has purchased an EndNote software site license for the Carleton College community. EndNote may be installed on any computer owned by Carleton, its students, or its employees.

EndNote is available on all computers in the Library. In addition:

Students: EndNote is available in ITS student computing labs.
For your personal computer, either 1) Use the links on this page to download and install EndNote; or 2) Check out an EndNote CD-ROM installer from the open reserve shelf in the Gould Library.

Faculty and academic staff: Please contact your ITS Academic Computing Coordinator before installing this software on the computer in your office.
For your personal computer, either 1) Use the links on this page to download and install EndNote; or 2) Check out an EndNote CD-ROM installer from the open reserve shelf in the Gould Library.

Administrative staff: Contact the Administrative Computing Help Desk at x4547 to have EndNote installed on the computer in your office.

EndNote 7 for Macintosh Installer (21.7 MB) (campus only link)

Requirements:

• MacOS X (10.1.5, 10.2.x);
• PowerPC Macintosh G3 or higher;

• Cite While You Write feature: Microsoft Word X (SR1 and up)

EndNote Support Files: Styles, Filters, Connection Files

The EndNote program uses hundreds of support files for transferring bibliographic data between your EndNote Library and your word processor (Microsoft Word), reference databases, and library catalogs.

Output Styles control how citations will be formatted in your Microsoft Word document;

Filters control how citations exported from particular reference databases and library catalogs are imported into your EndNote Library; and

Connection Files are used for interactively searching reference databases and library catalogs from within EndNote.

Gould librarians support and update the style, filter and connection files to make sure they work correctly with our resources. The most recent versions of the files are on kept on Collab at COLLAB\Departments\LIBR\Common\Applications\Windows in folders named PCStyles, PCFilters and PCConnections. The files here work for both Macs and PCs.

On Campus: To make sure you are using the most current copies of the files

1. Open EndNote.
2. Go to EndNote -> Preferences on a Mac, or Edit -> Preferences on a PC.
3. Choose Folder Locations from the left side of the preferences window.
4. Set the folder locations to the appropriate folders on Collab (COLLAB\Departments\LIBR\Common\Applications\Windows) for Connections, Filters and Styles.
5. Click OK.

Off Campus: You should download a recent set of the Gould Library styles, filters and connections to your computer using the links below.

1. Follow the instructions below to download styles, filters and connection files.
2. Open EndNote.
3. Go to EndNote -> Preferences on a Mac, or Edit -> Preferences on a PC.
4. Choose Folder Locations from the left side of the preferences window.
5. Set the folder locations to the appropriate folders on your computer.
6. Click OK.

Please contact your liaison librarian to report problems with a particular style, filter, or connection file, or to request that a file be created for a particular resource.

Output Styles Download

Output Styles control how citations will be formatted in your Microsoft Word document.

Here is the latest set of styles supported by the Gould Library liaison librarians.

Gould Library EndNote Styles Set, Mac format  402K  Tuesday, September 30, 2004.  Install instructions:

1. Quit EndNote.
2. Locate your Styles folder, located in your EndNote 7 folder on your hard drive.
3. Open your Styles folder, and trash all of the styles in it (but do not trash the Styles folder).
4. Click on the link to download the new styles set.
5. Stuffit Expander should automatically expand the download into a folder called MacStyles containing the new set of styles.
6. Move the styles into your Styles folder where your previous styles were.
7. Trash the now-empty MacStyles folder.

Gould Library EndNote Styles Set, PC format  522K Tuesday, September 30, 2004. Install instructions:

1. Close EndNote.
2. Locate your Styles folder, probably C:\Windows\Program Files\EndNote\Styles\
3. Open your Styles folder, and delete all of the styles in it (but do not delete the Styles folder).
4. Click on the link to download the new styles set.
5. Double-click on the PCStyles11_30_04.zip file that you downloaded.
6. Click on Extract all Files.
7. When the Extraction Wizard comes up, click Next, then browse to your now empty Styles folder. Click Next. The styles will be put in your styles folder.
8. Click Finish when the extraction is complete.

Import Filters Download

Filters control how citations exported from particular reference databases and library catalogs are imported into your EndNote Library.

Here is the latest set of filters supported by the Gould Library liaison librarians.

Gould Library EndNote Filters Set, Mac format  135K  Tuesday, September 30, 2004.  Install instructions:

1. Quit EndNote.
2. Locate your Filters folder, located in your EndNote 7 folder on your hard drive.
3. Open your Filters folder, and trash all of the filters in it (but do not trash the Filters folder).
4. Click on the link to download the new filters set.
5. Stuffit Expander should automatically expand the download into a folder called MacFilters containing the new set of filters.
6. Move the filters into your Filters folder where your previous filters were.
7. Trash the now-empty MacFilters folder.

1. Close EndNote.

Connection Files are used for interactively searching reference databases and library catalogs from within EndNote.

Gould Library EndNote Connection Files Set, Mac format  274K  Tuesday, September 30, 2004.  Install instructions:

1. Quit EndNote.
2. Locate your Connections folder, located in your EndNote 7 folder on your hard drive.
3. Open your Connections folder, and trash all of the connection files in it (but do not trash the Connections folder).
4. Click on the link to download the new connection files set.
5. Stuffit Expander should automatically expand the download into a folder called MacConnections containing the new set of connection files.
6. Move the connection files into your Connections folder where your previous connection files were.
7. Trash the now-empty MacConnections folder.

1. Close EndNote.
2. Locate your Connections folder, probably C:\Windows\Program Files\EndNote\Connections\
