Anita C. Hill
Anita C. Hill is working within the Lutheran Church to bring change around many issues including GLBT issues. As a trained minster with a M.A. degree from United Theological Seminary in the Twin Cities, she would like to be ordained, but cannot under current church law banning "practicing homosexuals" from the ministry. Instead, she serves as a minister with Wingspan Ministries, serves on task forces within the church and in society, including serving on the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) Task Force on Human Sexuality. She has experience as a diversity trainer, working with GLBT Lutherans, and minstering to those with AIDS. She has also worked for the Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota, the Familiy Service of St. Paul, and the Lutheran Human Relations Association.
With this background, Anita is in a unique position to speak on the struggles of being Lutheran and GLBT. Each individual chooses a different path: some remain within their church and keep quiet about their identity, others leave their church to lead more open lives, but for those who choose to remain within their church and be out there are joys and challenges as today's churches begin to face the legacy of homophobic teachings. In leading this Chapel service, Anita will help us understand both the joys and challenges of being out and Lutheran.

"The Wingspan Logo gives expression to the all-embracing arms of God which welcomes and affirms all people, but especially gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender persons, their families and friends. The flame is a reminder of the light of justice and freedom which continually shines in places of oppression and hopelessness. We know that oppression and hopelessness is a particular experience for GLBT people and we declare a mission whose goal is that one day that oppression will cease and the hopelessness will fade away."
