Research Interns Needed in Agroecology and Alternative Pest Management

Carleton College
Gain experience in agroecology by working on research projects focusing on field trials evaluating organic tactics for management of diseases, insect pests, and weeds of muskmelons. In addition, there will be work examining the behavior of cucumber beetles, the major pest of muskmelons. Experiments will be conducted at Big Woods Farm, an organic vegetable farm operated by Carleton Biology professor David Hougen-Eitzman. Interns participate in planting, weeding, scouting, downloading weather instruments, rating pest damage, and harvesting. They will assist with data collection for other experiments. Also, interns can incorporate an independent research project in their experience if desired. Access to vehicle required.

Iowa State University
Agroecology projects focusing on field trials evaluating organic, sustainable, and minimal-pesticide tactics for management of diseases, insect pests, and weeds of muskmelons and apples. Both replicated experiments at university farms and cooperative trials on the farms of commercial fruit and vegetable growers are included. Interns participate in planting, weeding, scouting, downloading weather instruments, rating pest damage, and harvesting. They can also take part in weekly meetings with plant pathology researchers and graduate students that emphasize sharpening scientific writing and experimental design skills. In addition, interns can incorporate an independent research project in their experience if desired.

Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors eligible. Need valid driver's license; work period extends from after graduation to mid-September. Contact David Hougen-Eitzman to apply.

 


CIMA Labs (MN).
Pharmaceutical company accepting applications for summer intern positions in Research and Development Analytical Chemistry Laboratory. Work will include development of new dosage forms/delivery systems including method development and validation, testing of raw materials and drug products, and stability testing in support of drug formulation activities. Applicants should have completed coursework in quantitative and instrumental analysis. Send cover letter, resume, and transcript to Jason Jennissen at jason.jennissen@cimalabs.com.

The Defender Association (WA).
Offering a hands-on internship in criminal defense investigation. Interns will receive training and supervision as they investigate cases for low-income individuals that have been accused of committing crimes. They will conduct interviews, photograph crime scenes, locate witnesses, check criminal records, serve subpoenas, and gather other information. Minimum of 20 hrs/week; unpaid. Two sessions offered for summer 2004: May 17th - Aug. 13th and June 16th - Sept. 15th. Applications available in the Career Center.

GLOBE USA (DC).
Global environmental coalition seeking energetic, responsible interns to work as part of a close-knit team. Duties may include researching, writing, and supervising layout and production of monthly newsletter, updating website, planning events and projects, and short term research and writing projects. Modest stipend provided, course credit available. Strong writing and editing skills needed, html knowledge preferred. Send reesume, cover letter, and one writing sample to resumes@globeusa.org. Student's Guide To Colleges.
Student-written, student-edited college guidebook seeking two creative and motivated Carleton students to act as liaisons between Student's Guide and the Carleton community. Interns expected to work 3-5 hours/week at various tasks involved in promoting, publicizing and compiling material. Interns will be responsible for designing, submitting, and executing a creative publicity campaign, chalking, tabling, and speaking at meetings of various student organizations. Deadline to apply is February 27; applicants will be notified by early March.
