Welcome to the first fall issue of the Career Center Bulletin. The bulletin is sent to juniors and seniors every other week and contains information about events, workshops, internships, jobs and more. The Career Center's mission is to teach students to plan, prepare for and pursue their life's career and educational goals. SLAC Fairs cater specifically to small liberal arts college students looking for employment. These employers have expressed interest in looking for students with liberal arts education. SLAC fairs are especially useful to interview with organizations that don't recruit on-campus. * Rochester Prometric is a convenient test center. They offer testing Monday-Saturday at 8:00 AM and 12:00 noon, plus Monday and Tuesday at 4:00 PM. They have one lab with 11 stations. As of 9/19/02 they indicated that they have a lot of availability in October. Their address is 2001 Second Street SW, Rochester. Directions: Take Hwy. 19 to Hwy. 52 So. Take the Second Street exit (same as for Mayo/St. Mary's Hospital) but turn right on Second Street. They are located 2-1/2 blocks from Hwy. 52.

Beginning October 1st, the computer-based General Test will include one 30-minute verbal section, one 45-minute quantitative section and one 60-minute analytical writing section. The analytical section has been changed to the new writing assessment and contains 2 tasks requiring written response. Plan for a 4 hour appointment to take the CBT. Two hours and 15 minutes are spent answering questions that count toward your score. The remaining time is spent on tutorials, background information questions, unidentified pretest and/or identified research sections, selecting score recipients and a survey.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES

Carleton College
Library Technical Services

Position is 20 to 30 hours per week from September 2002 through June 2003. Assist in making library material available to users, by providing ongoing support in all areas of Technical Services- Acquisitions, Cataloging, Periodicals, and Government Documents. Work closely with all staff in department on regular tasks and special projects. Recent Carleton graduate preferred.

Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program
Deadline: December 5

JET invites young graduates to come to Japan and engage in intercultural exchange through team-teaching in local public schools or working in local government offices. The JET Program is looking for people who are friendly, creative, adaptable, knowledgeable about American culture, and interested in Japan. Although teaching English is what most JET participants do, teaching English is only a means for cultural exchange-you are not expected to have professional teaching skills.

Jesuit Volunteer Corps
Deadline: February 15 (for international service); March 1 (for domestic service)

Hundreds of grassroots organizations across the country count on Jesuit Volunteers to provide essential services to low-income people and those who live on the margins of our society. Jesuit Volunteers serve the homeless, the unemployed, refugees, people with AIDS, the elderly, street youth, abused women and children, the mentally ill and the developmentally disabled. Social justice, simple life-style, community and spirituality: these values provide the cornerstone for living out a commitment to faith and justice. One-year commitment for domestic service begins in August. Two-year commitment for international service begins in July. JVC provides room and board, a small monthly stipend, health insurance, forbearances or deferral for most student loans.

Teach for America
Deadline: October 25 and February 21

Teach for America is the national corps of outstanding and diverse recent college graduates who commit two years to teach in public schools in low-income urban and rural communities. Each year, Teach for America selects a corps of more than 1,500 individuals, provides them extensive training during summer institutes, places them as full-time, paid teachers in urban and rural public schools, and coordinates an ongoing network to support them during their two years as teachers and beyond. Applications for the 2003 corps are available online.

United States Department of State Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs (OES)
Deadline: October 25

The OES is pleased to announce a full-time, year-long, paid internship opportunity starting in February 2003. This position is open to graduates and exceptional students of all majors, and offers a unique opportunity to work directly with the Special Assistant for Congressional Relations in the OES Bureau on a wide range of global issues such as climate change, HIV/AIDS policy and emerging infectious diseases, biotechnology, and marine conservation.
