Advertising Career Day

Sponsored by the Advertising Federation of Minnesota (Ad Fed), this Career Day offers you the opportunity to interact face-to-face with professionals and learn valuable, practical information about various advertising careers, including information on finding jobs in the field. Choose between three panel discussions and ten career-specific sessions conducted by professionals. There will be a networking lunch with representatives from the Twin Cities ad community. The cost is $45 at the door, or $40 if you register online.

Christian Career Fair

This is a great opportunity for students to explore employment, ministry, or summer options. The fair is designed to inform candidates of the variety of positions available in Christian organizations, and to provide these organizations the opportunity to meet with interested and qualified candidates. Bethel currently has almost 30 Christian organizations registered. This is a free event.

College of Veterinary Medicine Open House

This is a fun and entertaining way to go behind the scenes at the College of Veterinary Medicine, whether you're curious about the Veterinary Teaching Hospital's services, a career in veterinary medicine, or the injured birds of prey we rehabilitate. Discussions about the Veterinary Medicine admissions program, including a veterinary student panel, will take place at 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. Admission is free.

BASE SUMMER PROGRAM
Deadline: April 30

The Business for Arts, Sciences and Engineering (BASE) Summer Program at the HAAS School of Business at the University of CA, Berkeley is an intensive, six-week, summer business program, which exposes non-business undergraduate students or recent graduates to the fundamentals of business. The BASE Summer Program familiarizes participants with the tools necessary to conduct business research, analyze product and financial markets, examine organizational behavior issues, and effectively manage a career search. The program will run from July 7-August 15.

ALUMNI CONNECTIONS

Anna Lacey, '02, works at the Thomas Jefferson School in Concepcion, Chile. The school is looking for two assistant teachers to work in their elementary school. The pay is quite good for Chilean standards, and housing is provided, as well as the flight costs. It is a great job, easy, fun, and not much responsibility. They are looking for people to start mid-June and work until early December, with possible re-hire for the next school year. Also receive a few weeks of paid vacation! Ellen Carvill, '00, is leaving her current job as a director and teacher for Westover's "Women in Science and Engineering" program. Westover School is a girls' boarding and day school, grades 9-12. The program has classes in introductory engineering disciplines such as physical/structural, electrical, and computer engineering, AP Computer Science, and advanced electives in topics of the director's choosing. Westover is unique in the sense that other than the AP exam there isn't a set curriculum, leaving room to delve into ethics, discussions about gender, and virtually any area of technology and engineering which is of interest. Westover is looking for someone with creative ideas and a real love of the subject area. As the person currently running the program, there are three main things that Ellen Carvill loves about this program: the kids, the freedom, and the toys. You are able to teach classes that interest you--whether computer architecture, robotics, ecosystem engineering, or computer simulation so you'll always be learning something new and exploring new areas. Emily Montgomery, '00, would like to let Carleton students know about an opportunity with Asociacion ANDAR. Asociacion ANDAR, a Honduran non-profit, is looking for a qualified volunteer to supervise a community-based education center for 5 and 6 year-olds and their parents. The CEDIF (Centro de Desarrollo Infantil y Familiar) works with 35 children and their families. The program's focus in on a creative, nurturing, and participatory educational experience that breaks away from the traditional model of Honduran schooling. Jeffrey Slocum, '74, is the President of Jeffrey Slocum & Associates, Inc. The firm provides a variety of high quality investment consulting services to institutional investment funds. Jeffrey Slocum & Associates, Inc. seeks to hire an Intern for its Minneapolis office. Applicants should be juniors, seniors, or recent graduates. The company will teach the Intern whatever he or she needs to know about investments, so academic major is not as important as an intense desire to learn more about the consultative process and the workings of investments and capital markets. Jim McCorkell, '90, is the Executive Director of Admission Possible, an organization dedicated to helping make college admission possible for talented, motivated and economically disadvantaged students in Minnesota by providing ACT test preparation services and admissions and financial aid consulting. Admission Possible has a number of AmeriCorps opportunities. For complete job descriptions and application procedures refer to the Admission Possible web site. Admission Possible is currently seeking:
-Nine full-time AmeriCorps members (serving 1700 hours from September 2003 - June 2004) to serve as Admission Possible representative in a Minneapolis or St. Paul public high school and work directly with juniors providing ACT/SAT preparation sessions and working with students on an individual basis providing guidance and subject specific assistance. Deadline: April 18.
-Two full-time AmeriCorps VISTA members (serving from August 2003 - August 2004) to help build Admission Possible capacity by leveraging community volunteers, implementing communications strategy and coordinating partnerships with colleges and universities. Deadline: April 18.
-Twenty-two part-time AmeriCorps members (serving 900 hours over two academic years) to work directly with a team of 8-10 low-income young people to help them prepare for college. Duties include helping students prepare for the ACT/SAT, and guiding them through the college admissions process. Approximately 12-15 hours per week, September 2003 - May 2004, and again from September 2004 - May 2005. Deadline: April 25.

John Van Der Tuin, '75, would like to inform students about an opening for a paralegal, to begin this summer at the firm Balber Pickard Battistoni Maldonado & Van Der Tuin. They typically hire graduating seniors from strong liberal arts colleges. The position requires a two year commitment and pays $35,000 to start, plus benefits. The firm's office is in Mid-town Manhattan. Lindsay Mayka, '02, is recruiting a replacement for her position in the Office of Population and Reproductive Health at the United States Agency for International Development. She currently works as the Population Reference Bureau Fellow at USAID, a position that entails work tracking relevant legislation, drafting communications about the Agency's family planning programs, interacting with other international development donors and agencies, and backstopping various political and public relations needs as they arise. Meghan A. McCarthy, '96, currently works for The Lewin Group and would like to inform students of two job opportunities. The Lewin Group has two Research Analyst I positions open. The first one is an entry-level policy research and program support position. Job duties include a range of tasks such as general research and literature reviews, data analysis, memo and report writing, proposal support, and site visit support. Applicants should have their BA degree, preferably in public policy, social sciences, or a related field. The candidate should have outstanding critical reasoning, interpersonal, analytical, and writing skills; a demonstrated interest in policy research; direct experience with or interest in program support; and the capacity to work under tight deadlines. The candidate should have experience using multiple software applications, including Word and Excel. Children's Hospital Boston is seeking a Research Associate to assist on projects with adolescents and young adults in the areas of mental health and sexually transmitted disease. Responsibilities include recruiting participants, conducting detailed sexual history interviews, aiding clinic providers with specimen collection, contacting and following up with participants, discussing positive Chlamydia results with study participants, coordinating efforts with research assistants and investigators at other sites, and monitoring treatment and follow-up of clinic patients with a positive sexually transmitted disease result. Also assist in project planning, conduct literature searches, pilot study instruments, train and coach study participants in their own data collection, and manage and maintain a database. Applicants must be mature individuals with a college degree and some work experience, must be comfortable with adolescents, must have experience in working as part of a team, and have the ability to take initiative and work without direct supervision. Youth Counselors live in the outdoors year-round and guide and influence group activities on a consistent basis that enhances at-risk youth's confidence and self-esteem. At the camps, small groups replicate family living, and progress is enhanced by a positive peer group bond. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys outdoor adventure including canoeing, and hiking, and also wants to make a difference in the life of a child. A Bachelor's degree in any discipline is required. Applicants should have experience working or volunteering with youth and an interest in the outdoors. Sports and/or a physical fitness background is highly desirable, as well as a passion to see kids succeed. Compensation is $20,000 plus free room and board. Middlebury College, VT
The Career Services Office at Middlebury College is seeking a part-time Career Counselor/Resource Coordinator to work during the academic year assisting students and alumni with all aspects of the career search process. Responsibilities include maintaining the career resource library, providing resume and cover letter critiques, being a resource to students on internships, job search and networking questions, conducting student workshops on topics related to the job search process, and conducting student focus groups. Bachelor's degree is required. This is a 9 month, 27-30 hour a week, entry level position. Position begins in August.

The Outdoor Academy, NC
The Outdoor Academy (OA) is an academic semester school for 10th graders. Arising from a long tradition of experiential education at Eagle's Nest Camp, OA combines a rigorous college preparatory curriculum with an outdoor program, environmental education, regional studies, community building, and the arts. OA is seeking a Resident/Outdoor Leader to begin in August, 2003. Residents live with students in a dorm or cabin. As mentors they foster a healthy and responsible environment. Residents also co-lead wilderness trips involving rock climbing, whitewater paddling, and backpacking, coordinate weekend activity planning, facilitate weekend meal preparation, and teaching or co-teaching a class is a possibility. Pathfinder International, MA
Pathfinder International works to improve the reproductive health of women, men, and adolescents throughout the developing world. The Program Assistant works closely with the Senior Program Officer to provide program backstopping and support to select Pathfinder field offices in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Program Assistant assumes primary responsibility for program administration of Pathfinder-supported projects in the region. Riviere English School, Japan

Riviere English School is located in Osaka, the 2nd largest city in Japan. The school is seeking native English speakers to teach English (language and daily conversation) to a wide variety of students, from 6-year-old children to adults. Teachers receive a salary paid monthly in Japanese currency, inexpensive accommodations near the school, a private furnished room, and a one way flight ticket from the U.S. to Osaka. Employment is July 1, 2003 through June 30, 2004. This one year contract may be extended by mutual agreement. Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS), VT

VINS is a nonprofit, statewide organization dedicated to protecting Vermont's natural heritage through education and research designed to engage individuals and communities in the active care of their environment. VINS is looking for two full-time, year-round educators to present educational programs (many of which use live animals) to audiences of all ages, work with staff to develop new programs, and help with the care and handling of raptors, reptiles and amphibians used in programs. Expected starting date is July 1, 2003.

The Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA), Washington, DC
Deadline: April 18

WOLA seeks an administrative staff person to work with program staff covering the Andean region, Mexico, and U.S. international drug control policy. S/he will coordinate the work of a 4-person team in a fast-paced human rights organization working in Washington and Latin America. The position is for two years, subject to an evaluation at the end of the first three months, and brings a committed individual into contact with the human rights, religious and foreign policy communities in Washington and Latin America. Applicants must have a demonstrated commitment to human rights, democracy and social justice in Latin America; good initiative, with ability to accept supervision, and delegate tasks to interns; ability to learn office/organizational procedures; excellent organizational and administrative skills, follow-through, and attention to detail.
