IIMCR, SUMMER PROGRAMS
IIMCR's International Symposia provides students with a rare opportunity to examine and address conflict in a unique learning environment. During each four-week, academically accredited course, young people from around the world interact with experts in the field, diplomats, esteemed academics, and seasoned practitioners. Scholarships are available.

International Student Symposium on Negotiation and Conflict Resolution
July 19-August 16, The Netherlands

This Symposium will explore the phenomenon of conflict by addressing the most current themes and events in conflict resolution, international affairs, and international law. Participants will be empowered with critical knowledge and practical skills to build a new vision for facing future conflict.

Latin American Student Symposium on Negotiation and Conflict Resolution
June 14-July 12, Mexico
Deadline: February 28

This Symposium will explore the phenomenon of conflict through the lens of past and present Latin American affairs. Students will gain a nuanced understanding of Latin American disputes and will develop- through simulation training -the practical skills and techniques necessary to confront conflict constructively.

SUMMER SYMPOSIUM FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS IN INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS
Women in International Security (WIIS) Summer Symposium
"The Changing Nature of Peace and War"
Washington, DC
June 5-10, 2003
Application Deadline: March 3
The WIIS Summer Symposium is open to students currently registered in either a master's or doctoral degree program in any subject or field relating to international affairs, including international relations, political science, history, security studies, public policy, conflict resolution, law, and relevant sciences. Applications can be downloaded from their web site. WIIS covers all costs for room, board and the Symposium program. Please note that for successful candidates, the conference fee is $125.00. Limited travel fellowships and fee waivers are available for students who can present a clear case of need.

COLUMBIA PUBLISHING COURSE
The Columbia Publishing Course is the premier post-graduate training program for the publishing profession. The course provides an intensive introduction to all aspects of book, magazine, and electronic publishing. This summer's session will run from June 23 through August 1. The deadline for applications is March 21.

Monterey Institute of International Studies is a small, private graduate school that educates students for professional, global careers in international business, international policy studies, translation and interpretation, and language teaching. Candidates with a minimum grade point average of 3.3 are invited to compete for scholarships up to $10,000 per year.

Conor Weir, '97,
wants to encourage Carleton students to apply for an internship with Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly (LBFE). LBFE is a non-denominational nonprofit organization focused on relieving isolation and loneliness among the elderly. This is really a professional level internship with the opportunity to develop career skills by working with dedicated professionals in an organization that is really growing and making a significant difference in the community. Internship opportunities are in three areas: Program, direct service to elders; Volunteer, coordinate volunteers to provide services; Development - generate revenue to help us serve more elders. LBFE provides health insurance, housing, car insurance (max of $1,000/yr), monthly stipend of $450, and mileage reimbursement. Amnesty International USA
Patrick Stewart Human Rights Scholarship

Deadline: March 15

The Patrick Stewart Human Rights Scholarship offers a unique opportunity for students like you to gain practical experience in the field of human rights. Amnesty International USA awards these scholarships to student activists for summer internships or other short-term human rights projects. Ranging from $300 to $1,800, scholarships can be used for travel, materials, and other expenses.

Charles G. Koch Summer Fellow Program
Deadline: February 15

The Institute for Humane Studies is pleased to announce that on-line applications are now available for their summer internship program in public policy. The Charles G. Koch Summer Fellow Program provides full-time, paid internships at a public policy organization in Washington, DC, where students gain invaluable experience. In addition to an 8-week internship, the fellowship includes a $1,500 stipend and furnished housing, travel expenses, two-weeklong seminars on public policy, and career development workshops.

Herbert Scoville Jr. Peace Fellowship, Washington, DC
Deadline: February 10
for Fall Fellowship
This program that provides college graduates the opportunity to work in Washington, DC, with a public-interest organization focusing on arms control and international security issues. Scoville Fellows may undertake a variety of activities, including research, writing, and organizing in support of the goals of their host organization and may attend coalition meetings, policy briefings, and Congressional hearings. Many former Scoville Fellows are hired either by their host organization or another group dealing with arms control or peace issues following their fellowships. The fellowship is offered twice yearly, in the spring and fall. It lasts from six to nine months and provides a stipend, health insurance, and travel costs to Washington. The Scoville Fellowship does not award grant or scholarship money to students.

Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships
Deadline: March 5

The Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships program is the world's largest privately-sponsored international scholarship program. Rotary International's primary purpose is to find persons with excellent academic ability who will be "ambassadors of goodwill" while they study abroad. The Northfield Rotary Club now invites applications for awards to begin after July 1, 2004. The Northfield Rotary Club can send up to two applicants to the District where they will compete with at least twenty strong applicants from other clubs. The scholarships are for one academic year and provide up to $25,000 for round-trip transportation, tuition and fees, room, board, necessary educational supplies, and additional language training (if necessary). Carleton's representative is Steve Kelly, Dean for Budget an d Planning. Interested students should contact him soon to arrange a meeting. Normally juniors and seniors apply for the local competition but there is no age limit for applicants, so you can still apply to a Rotary club where you live or work after graduation. JOBS AND INTERNSHIPS

Appalachian Outreach and Samaritan House, TN
Deadline: April 1

Carson-Newman College Campus Ministries is accepting applications for summer staff members for Appalachian Outreach (a poverty home-repair ministry) and Samaritan House (a homeless shelter for families and single women who can stay, as residents, up to 45 days as they look to find housing, jobs, social services, etc.). Thirteen college students will be employed to work with these Christian social ministries. Applicants need to be committed Christians, have experience in home repair (experience is not required, but helpful), relate well to youth, and be interested in working with poverty level people. Central European Teaching Program (CETP)
Deadline: March 15
CETP, part of the World Affairs Center at Beloit College, offers renewable 10-month contracts for English conversation teachers. Duties include teaching conversational English to middle school, high school, or university students, leading 18 to 22 class meetings per week (45 min/class), enhancing students' oral fluency through classroom drills, games, and listening comprehension work.

The Foreign Service of the United States
Deadline for April 12 Written Examination: March 5
A career in the Foreign Service can offer excitement, challenge, and the satisfaction of serving one's country. Five job specialization areas exist: Administrative, Consular, Economic, Political, and Public Democracy. Descriptions of the career tracks are available online. Registration for the mandatory written examination is also available online. There is no registration fee.

Graduate Public Service Internship (GPSI), University of Illinois at Springfield
Deadline: March 15

GSPI interns serve a 21-month paid internship at a state agency while working on their graduate degree at UIS. Forty credit hours are paid by the program. Students work half time during the regular academic year and receive a stipend of $850 per month. During the summer, students work full-time and receive a stipend of $1700 per month.

Northwestern University, IL
Northwestern University currently has open positions on both the Evanston and Chicago Campuses. Employment opportunities at Northwestern University in entry-level positions can provide valuable training and work experience. The job postings are updated daily. Keep their web site in mind for future job searches.

The Southern Poverty Law Center, AL
Deadline: April 16

Southern Poverty Law Center is seeking a full-time Program Coordinator for the Teaching Tolerance Department. The selected candidate will report to the Director, Teaching Tolerance, and work in a team environment. Primary responsibilities include coordinating communications and partnerships with other equity and education organizations nationwide, extending and enhancing the program's communication with educators K-16 and facilitating communication and collaboration among those constituents, and presenting on behalf of the program at regional and national conferences and other events. Applicants must have excellent communication skills (including demonstrated public speaking and writing experience), interest in education and equity issues, organizing experience or experience in membership organizations, and must be organized, detail-oriented, flexible, creative and able to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown University, RI
International Education Internship
Deadline: March 15

The Watson Institute International Education Internship has been established in order to enable one recent college graduate each year to spend a year working as part of a team focused on increasing international education at the secondary level. The goal of this internship is to strengthen international education at the secondary level by contributing to the core of those in the early stages of a career who share a strong commitment to the field and a vision for how to foster its growth. It is an expectation that the International Education Intern will be planning to enter the field of education at the secondary level. The International Education Internship is a one-year appointment. Salary will be $1,500/month plus benefits.

Youth for Peace and Sustainable Community: Semillero de Futuros, Mexico
Deadline: March 1, 2002 for regular applicants, with notice given by April 1.
Waiting list applications accepted through April 15, 2001.

The American Friends Service Committee is pleased to announce the 2003 Mexico Summer Project: Youth for Peace and Sustainable Community- Semilleros de Futuros (Sowing Futures). The aim is to provide a place for youth from different countries of the Americas, Europe, and the indigenous communities of Xilitla to work together on community projects, share from their diverse cultures and experiences, and learn ways to address the political, ecological and economic challenges of their present and their future.
