CENTURY INSTITUTE SUMMER PROGRAM (CISP)
The CISP is a leadership development and civic engagement initiative for outstanding college sophomores and juniors. CISP is a two-week program (June 29-July 12) held on the campus of Williams College in MA and is designed to introduce undergraduate students to the progressive tradition in American public policy. All program expenses are paid (including transportation), and students receive a $650 stipend. The early admission deadline is March 14, and the regular admission deadline is April 7.

The Midwest Academy is one of the nation's oldest and best-known schools for community organizations, citizen organizations and individuals committed to progressive social change. Since 1973, the Academy has trained more the 30,000 people from over 1500 organizations. Anne Pecha, 96, is willing to talk to students interested in the journalism field. She has a few years experience -- primarily in editing but in reporting as well -- in different types of publications, including a community newspaper, World Book encyclopedia, and more specialized "hard-news" newsletters in Washington. She has just started working as a copy editor for Dow Jones Newswires in D.C. Anne used alumni connections to learn more about the field before starting out, is happy to pass on what she has learned. She also might be able to provide a little bit of insight on how you might work your way into a job for which you have little experience, since she was chemistry major at Carleton, and on how to create your own opportunities in general. FELLOWSHIPS AND SCHOLARSHIPS

Postgraduate Fellowships Meeting for Juniors
Tuesday, March 4, 7:00pm, Boliou Auditorium
Meeting for juniors interested in applying for Postgraduate Fellowships such as the Fulbright, Churchill, Marshall, Mellon, Rhodes, Rotary, and Watson. The faculty advisors will describe the fellowships and procedures.

Liberty Mutual Scholarship Program
Deadline: March 15

Awards include eight $5,000 scholarships for students who are juniors in the 2002-2003 academic year, together with an opportunity to participate in a summer internship with Liberty Mutual. Nine $5,000 scholarships will be awarded to students who are seniors in the 2002-2003 academic year. To qualify, you must be a full-time students at a private college affiliated with the Foundation for Independent Higher Education (Carleton is a member), have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.4, have an appropriate major and interest in working in a business environment. Applications are available online.

Martin Luther King, Jr., Scholars Program, Washington D.C.
Deadline: February 21

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholars Program is an eight-week, paid internship at the United States Department of Education. Up to ten outstanding undergraduate or graduate students with an interest in education policy or public policy and administration will be selected to participate in the program this summer. The program is open to continuing juniors, seniors, and graduate students. Students must be enrolled on a full-time basis in an accredited undergraduate or graduate degree program and have plans to register for the Fall term. Students can be from any field of study. Minnesota Collegiate Entrepreneur Awards
Deadline: April 1

These awards are presented annually to students who for the past year have operated a business while enrolled in at least 12 credits at a college or university in Minnesota. For more information, come to the Career Center or visit thier web site.

American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), Washington D.C.
Deadline: March 17

The AFSC has an intern opportunity for a recent college graduate at their Washington Office. Starting September 2003, this opening is a full-time, paid, nine-month position. The intern will assist in varied program, interpretation, and advocacy tasks arising from AFSC work on peace and social justice issues and also with Davis House, an international guest house. AmeriCorps*VISTA, MN
The Northfield Reads/Counts Tutoring Coordinator position is available for the 2003-2004 school year. The main responsibility is to ensure the continued success of the reading and math tutoring programs in Northfield. Compensation is $730 monthly living stipend, a campus apartment, health insurance, student loan deferment, and a post-service educational award of $4725. Concordia Language Villages, MN
Concordia Language Villages offers internationally recognized language and culture programming. Become a member of their summer or year-round staff and experience the magic of working with young people in a global setting. Applicants must enjoy working with children, have an interest in world cultures, like to have fun, and speak one of the languages they teach (Chinese, Danish, Finnish, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Russian, Spanish, and Swedish).

MN Women's Political Caucus

E-Women Win is an internet community committed to educating, energizing, and empowering women throughout the state of Minnesota. General English Education Center, China
The General English Education Center in China is a nonprofit education institution licensed by the local government in GuangXi, China. They are seeking two native English-speaking volunteers/teachers for their fall 2003 classes. Most students in these classes are high school students. The commitment is for 8 months. No prior teaching experience is required. The Center will provide a competitive monthly salary, free rooms, roundtrip airfares to and from China, and free local tours during the break. This is also a very good opportunity for students planning to study Chinese. If hired, you will be able to attend free Chinese classes while in China. JUSTICECORPS
Deadline: April 7 (rolling admission so you are encouraged to apply early)

JUSTICECORPS offers full-time professional positions with community organizations working for social and economic justice. In the interest of building and sustaining a widespread grassroots movement for social and economic justice, JUSTICECORPS seeks to attract top-notch recent graduates and young activists to jobs devoted to making America a more equitable society. JUSTICECORPS offers positions with community organizations on the front lines of battles for economic justice. JUSTICECORPS jobs typically involve community organizing on local, state, and national campaigns. Duties include door-to-door recruitment, leadership development, organizing a community base, and coordinating and initiating strategic campaigns. All placements are one-year professional salaried positions with the participating organizations, earning between $18,500--$25,000 plus benefits. All JUSTICECORPS organizers are required to attend training with the nation's leading organizers and activists in August. Jobs are scheduled to begin in early September 2003. Mass Audubon at the Blue Hills, MA
Mass Audubon is seeking summer nature camp instructors to help design and implement nature lessons to children (grouped according to age, from 4 to 14) at a nature day camp. Instructors incorporate games, hikes, stories, songs, and skits into lessons. The camp is located on a scenic hilltop within a 7000-acre reservation, minutes from Boston. Candidates must be certified in First Aid and CPR. Compensation is $320-$400 per week. Housing is available for a small fee. Sonoma County Public Policy Management Internship, CA
Deadline: March 7

The Public Policy Internship at the Economic Development Board (EDB) provides recent college graduates with a remarkable opportunity to gain practical experience in economic research, report development, public analysis, and taskforce management. The internship runs from July 8, 2003 through June 28, 2004. The salary is approximately $39,000 for the year. To apply, email your cover letter and resume to Colette Thomas at edb@sonoma-county.org. Southern Teachers Agency (STA), Various Locations
STA connects teachers to positions in public and private schools in the South. STA places teachers in public schools in VA and NC, and in private schools throughout the Southeast. There are no registration or placement fees. Job postings are available through Carleton's eRecruiting site.

U.S. Department of Justice, Antitrust Division
Honors Paralegal Specialists assist attorneys with all aspects of criminal and civil investigations and trials. Work in a team environment with attorneys, economists, other paralegals and FBI agents. Projects include legal research and writing, document review and witness interviews. Paralegals are hired for a two-year appointment, which may be extended. The job provides excellent background for law school and other graduate programs. Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.45 or higher, strong analytical and organizational ability and be a self-starter who works efficiently under pressure. Compensation is $33,271 per year.
