Concluding Your Cover Letter

Step Four: Concluding Your Cover Letter

The conclusion to your letter should be brief and to the point. Here are some tips for what should be included in the last paragraph.

End with a paragraph stating the action you will take ("I will call on February 11") or requesting the action you seek ("I hope to hear from you"). In general, it is better to take the initiative yourself, but if you are applying to an advertised position, the employer may not be able to take your call.

Remember, the goal of your cover letter and résumé is to obtain an interview, but don't use the word "interview." Instead, suggest you "arrange a meeting" or "meet at some future point".

This is also a good place to make reference to your résumé, which should be enclosed, and the date you would be able to begin working for the employer.

Close with an expression of appreciation. "Thank you for your time" or "Thank you for your consideration" are two good endings.
