Dundas, Minn., May 7- Nate Sundberg drove in the game-winning
run with a sacrifice fly to center to lead St. Thomas to a 2-1
victory over St. Olaf in the championship game of the inaugural
MIAC Postseason Tournament Sunday. With this win, St. Thomas
secured the MIAC tournament championship and the MIAC's automatic
bid into the NCAA Division III baseball tournament.
St. Thomas scored first with Steve Aronson's solo homer in the top of the second inning. St. Olaf had several opportunities to score in the middle innings of the game, but were unable to convert; the Oles stranded a total of 11 men on base during the game. St. Thomas scored again in the top of the eighth. Brad Bonine reached base on an error, and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Jake Mauer moved him to third, with a single to left, setting the stage for Sundberg's game winning RBI.
St. Olaf threatened in the bottom of the ninth, scoring one run on an error. St. Thomas' Mike Honsa, the tournament' MVP, struck out Tim Thoreson with the bases loaded to secure the final out and the tournament championship.
Matt Buzell led the Tommies at the plate, going a perfect three for three. St. Olaf was led by Dan LaManna, who went three for five. Brian Toov picked up the win for St. Thomas, improving his tournament record to 2-0 with a 1.62 ERA over 13 innings pitched. Honsa earned the save for the Tommies in four relief innings, leaving his tournament statistics at 1-0 with a 0.54 ERA over thirteen innings pitched. Erik Goodmanson took the complete game loss for St. Olaf.
