Dundas, Minn., May 6 - St. Olaf pounded St. Thomas in a 13-8 victory here Saturday at the MIAC Baseball Tournament to force a final, decisive championship game Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Oles (34-4 overall) pounded 20 hits, and capitalized on four St. Thomas errors to score five unearned runs in the win over the Tommies (27-12 overall). Because of the double-elimination format of the tournament, the two teams face each other again tomorrow, with the tournament title and an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III tournament on the line.
St. Olaf led 3-2 before scoring 10 unanswered runs between the fifth and eighth innings. Nick Beisel delivered the big blow in the five-run eighth inning that sealed the win, slamming a two-run home run. Brian Sprout was 4-for-6 for the game with three runs scored and two doubles, while Beissel and Lars Finanger were both 3-for-6.
Brent Larsen picked up the win for the Oles, scattering seven
hits across 7 1/3 innings. He allowed three earned runs and walked
only one. Bryan Edstrom, who conceded four runs, three of them
unearned, took the loss.
St. Olaf is now 3-1 in tournament action, while St. Thomas is
2-1.
