(this page is out of date) Connecting to the File Servers from a Mac First Login to the Tree To access files on the file servers you will need to login to the "tree". Note that although your username may be the same, this is different from logging in to veblen. 1. In the upper right hand corner of any public lab mac you should see a picture of a little tree with or without leaves (as in winter time) 2. Click on the little tree and pull down a menu that says: * Get NDS Info * Login * Change Password * Logout Choose Logout if the tree has leaves, then click on the tree without leaves and choose Login (choose Login first if the tree has no leaves.) If you can't Logout make sure no other programs are running. You may need to check the finder menu ( under the upper-right most icon) to bring forward and shut down running programs. Restarting the machine will also clear things up but may take awhile. (If the machine is shut off while someone is still logged in the computer may appear to hang for several minutes) 3. You should get a login screen which asks for a User Name and a Password. If you have an account enter your username and password, writing over whatever default username was given. By default the username should be "maclab" or "cmc102." depending on your location. You can log in as either of these users (with no password) if you are on a public lab machine and don't need to access your personal files. Note that student account usernames are the same as Veblen usernames with the addition of .a to the end, where the letter a is replaced the first character of your username. e.g. smithc.s The tree will then get leaves. If you haven't logged in before, the message may say "password expired." Type in a password. It should be different from your Vax account password but something just as memorable for you. Avoid using single, correctly spelled words as passwords. Also, passwords must be at least 8 characters long. (You can always change your password after logging in by selecting the "Change Password" option from the menu that appears when you click on the tree.) (Note: on some machines your username may not work. This is true for faculty using public lab machines, and students using machines in faculty labs. In this case you will need to specify your "true" username. For students this is: .username.a.stu.acad.carleton and for faculty it is something like .username.department.fac.acad.carleton The leading period is necessary, and you should substitute your "username" and "department" in the places indicated.(and the first character of your username in place of "a") Connect to the Servers 1. Click on the muti-colored apple icon in the upper left-hand corner of the screen and select Chooser from the menu that appears. 2. Click on the Appleshare icon in the upper left of the box that appears. Click on Residential in the lower left. Then double-click on the name Fabio on the right side of the box. 3. Select Fabio User in the box that appears and click on the OK button. Access the Files Fabio User can be "opened" by double clicking on the icon. It contains a (the) folder(s) for the class(es) for which have an account(s). In general the class folders will contain a personal folder with your username on it, a common folder of some sort, and possibly a folder for handing in homework. Items put in the common folder can be accessed by the whole class. Items in your personal folder can only be accessed by you. In general, homework folders are setup so that you can drag files into them, but not access the contents in any way. The actual setup may vary from class to class. The one constant is the fact that this folder and everything in it will be permanently deleted when the course is over. If you want to save anything that is the class folder you'll need to copy it to some permanent location before 5 o'clock the last day of finals. In addition you should be able to see a folder with the first letter of your last name. In it should be a folder with your username on it. This is your personal storage space that will remain yours until you graduate. You are limited to storing 10 megabytes (about 7 floppies worth) of data in this folder at any one time. To open and save files from/to your space on Fabio User from within programs (e.g. Word, Excel) use the standard Open/Save choices under the File menu. The dialog box that appears should have a bar in the upper left with a directory name on it. Clicking and holding on this bar will reveal a menu which allows you to select Desktop. After doing this Fabio User should appear on the list of options in the window beneth the bar. Double-click on the name Fabio User, then the name of the class folder, and then the name of the folder you wish to open/save you file from/in. At this point any file you open or save should come from the directory you've just selected. DO NOT FORGET TO LOGOUT! It is extremely important that you remember to logout of the tree. If you do not successfully logout, your files will be open for anyone who sits at that computer after you. In addition, your password could be changed without your consent and you'll lose valuable work time trying to figure out what has happened. To logout, Save your work and simply go back to the tree at the top of the screen and click. Drag down to logout and release. As a courtesy to people who would like to use the machine after you, please then click on Special, drag down to Restart and release. Log the machine back in to the public user site name (either cmc102 or maclab) and leaving the password blank. This will enable the machine to be used by the next person.
