Diversity On Campus

Carleton College defines itself as an institution that values diversity. This is reflected in the importance and pride the College places in a student body that includes a balanced number of men and women, and includes people from a variety of racial, ethnic, socio-economic, religious, sexual, and national identities. The College recognizes the traditional liberal arts goal of expanding students intellectual horizons by exposing all students both to a diversity of cultures and to an analysis of the experience of being different.

Multicultural Resources and Opportunities

For over twenty-five years, the Office of Intercultural Life has been an integral part of the College's initiatives to promote an environment that is supportive of diversity and stimulates cultural awareness between students, faculty, and staff. The Office assists in creating a supportive environment for students of color, where they can excel academically and socially. Therefore, the Office of Intercultural Life is constantly refocusing its efforts to meet the needs of the Carleton Community.

Religious Life and Resources

The role of the Chaplaincy at Carleton is to help deepen spiritual and ethical life on campus. The Office of the Chaplain serves people of all faiths as well as those seeking and exploring spirituality in their lives. Students, faculty, and staff are given opportunities to celebrate their faith and explore the integral relationships between faith and learning through weekly services, discussion groups, lectures, service projects, and social events.

TRIO/Student Support Services

TRIO/Student Support Services is a program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education with a mission of creating a supportive environment for low income, first generation college students (neither parent has a four year college degree), and/or students with a documented disability. TRIO programs provide services to help students overcome academic, social, and cultural barriers to success in higher education. The Carleton TRIO/SSS program also works with students to address financial barriers, by providing a textbook lending library, budget management workshops, and financial aid information to assist in reducing a student's loan burden. TRIO programs are recognized nationwide for the positive impact they have on students, and for the exceptional accomplishments of TRIO alumni.

International Students

Carleton has a rapidly growing international student population. The students who come from 29 countries add to Carleton's diverse environment by contributing their unique cross-cultural and international experiences and background inside and outside of the classroom. They have the opportunity to explore these perspectives in Carleton's unique Cross-Cultural Studies Concentration which brings together American and international students in team-taught, interdisciplinary seminars.
