Cookies @ Dacie Moses House

A tradition a few of my friends and I have is to visit Dacie Moses House (aka the cookie house, aka Dacie’s) late at night to make cookies (ingredients and supplies are free as long as you share your creations with others), eat them before and after cooking them, and have deep, philosophical conversations about our experiences at Carleton (not kidding about the last one).

Dacie Moses

Dacie Moses house used to belong to a former librarian of the school who after passing away donated it to the school, stipulating that the house always be open to students and be stocked with cookies. On Sundays, the house also hosts brunches open to Carleton students and the wider Northfield community that I’ve personally attended a few times. However, the house is most well known for its cookies and for the sometimes (too) inventive students who bake them.

Fellow blogger Eve and I, along with a few other friends, started dropping by Dacie’s during the winter of 2017, most of us less than experienced cookie bakers. Since then, we’ve remembered that eggs are important parts of any cookie recipe and that experimenting with particularly concentrated ingredients like cinnamon and vanilla extract can make less than edible sweets. My most recent creations include double chocolate chip and chocolate chip cookies, as illustrated below (they taste better than they look; presentation’s another aspect of cooking I have yet to master):

Chase is a junior linguistics major and is more than glad to exchange the year-round California heat for some Minnesota seasonality. In his free time, he enjoys directing K-pop dances for Karl-Pop, playing guzheng, and cycling around Northfield. When Chase doesn’t have free time, which is often, he’ll be in the libe or Sayles with a cup (or cups) of chai tea in hand.
